As I sit here in front of the Christmas tree, its twinkling lights casting a glow across the room, I can’t help but feel the magic of the season. Outside, the frost has painted the world silver, and the chill in the air seems to make the warmth indoors all the more comforting. In my hand, I cradle a dram of whisky, its amber depths catching the light like liquid gold. Whisky, like Christmas, is an invitation to pause, to savour, and to celebrate the little joys that make life richer.

My journey into the world of whisky started with a little pretension. In my younger days, I thought of whisky as a drink of sophistication. So, I sipped and nodded along, pretending to detect nuances I hadn’t the faintest idea about. Over time, though, this gave way to genuine appreciation. Whisky has a way of drawing you in, inviting you to slow down and explore its complexity. What I’ve come to love most is how it brings people together. Whether it’s a tasting with friends or a shared dram at the end of a long day, whisky has an ability to spark connection and conversation. Everyone smells, tastes and perceives something different and unique. In that way, it feels like the perfect drink for the Christmas season — a time when we gather, share stories, and appreciate the warmth of each other’s company.

For this festive post, I couldn’t think of a better whisky to feature than the Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old. Bunnahabhain holds a special place in my heart – it was one of the first distilleries I encountered on my whisky journey, and it’s remained a trusted companion ever since. 

Nose (The smell): Right away, this whisky greets you with a wave of sweetness, flashbacks to some of my favourite childhood desserts. Caramelized pineapple, sticky toffee pudding, treacle, and a touch of marzipan all come to mind. Delve a little deeper, and a floral note emerges, wildflowers contrasting that dessert-like richness.

Palette (The flavour): The nose didn’t lie; the sweetness is front and centre here. Brown sugar, caramel, and maraschino cherries take the spotlight, supported by classic sherried notes like hazelnut, sultanas, and a touch of creamy vanilla. But what really sets this dram apart is its funky, earthy undertone — a distinctive “dirty” edge. Hints of roasted coffee and damp earth seem to ground the sweetness. The texture is thick, oily, and almost chewy!

Finish (After you’ve swallowed): The finish is impressively long, with flavours lingering well after the liquid has disappeared. At 60% ABV, you’d expect some heat, but this whisky avoids that, instead delivering flavour that clings to your tongue. It’s a satisfying finale to a special dram.
